I was out with my daughter yesterday, shopping at my local thrift store, when a lady commented on my hair.
I turned around to thank her, and we got chatting.
I felt I had found an older version of myself. Picking up conversations with strangers, quite naturally.
Her husband stood next to her. They both were well dressed and had the kindest eyes.
She told me they were in their eighties and that they loved coming to the thrift store.
In the 45-minute conversation, I found out they had been married for 64 years. He was from the city of Baltimore, while she was “with the cows”! They were Italian. Met when they were 19. Love at first sight.
Forget about being a scientist, this should win a Nobel Prize, in my opinion.
I asked her, “What is your secret?” “The love of Jesus Christ, my husband, kids, friends, and lots of laughter,” she replied.
They told me they don’t possess cell phones, laptops, or iPads.
They claimed that nowadays, people on social media tell strangers about every detail of their lives while failing to spend time with their families. That made me sad.
But oh! The joy they found in talking face-to-face with strangers in a thrift store!
This is what they do each week. Go around to the stores in their area and share their love with strangers.
The positive energy they brought to our conversation! We talked about Jesus, shared stories, talked about friends and family, and laughed.
I was unaware of the time! Yeah, I can talk, too.
I won’t forget this sweet couple for a long time! I hope I meet them again! And I hope you do as well!
Great article Nicole, yes, the gift of the gab is a blessing, and sometime gets you out of a mess as well:)
Ah yes! You seem to know me well. Why don’t you identify yourself? 🙂
